Last month our picnic trips took us to several locations connected to Independence Day and the Revolutionary War. In that list we mentioned Historic Brattonsville. This month we would like to shine the spotlight on this wonderful spot. Part of York County’s Culture and Heritage Museum system, Historic Brattonsville practically sits in Rock Hill’s backyard, making it ideal for a quick picnic trip.

Directions

Either route from Rock Hill to Historic Brattonsville will take about 20 minutes.

If you’re leaving from the north side of town take 322 (Cherry Road) to State Route 165.

Folks leaving from the south side will probably want to take State Highway 101 (Ogden Road) to State Route 165.

Stop somewhere along the way to fill the cooler with Coca-Cola products.

What to Do

With nearly 800 acres to explore, any visitor will easily fill a day at Historic Brattonsville.

Living History

The living history demonstrations will likely be the most engaging. You can see how people lived, worked, and played during Colonial times. The working farm includes cattle, sheep, and poultry that would have been around during the period.

Historic Structures

Thirty historic structures are scattered around the area. Some are open to the public; others can only be viewed from the outside. One of these buildings is Hightower Hall, which appears in the 2000 film The Patriot starring Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger. Other structures include the Colonel William Bratton House, the Homestead House, the Slave Houses, the Kitchen, and the Dairy.

Walt Schrader Trails

Named for conservationist and environmentalist Walt Schrader, the trail system at Historic Brattonsville covers a 6 mile network. Any visitor could easily spend the day doing nothing more than wandering the beautiful backcountry.

Part of the trail system crosses the site of the Battle of Huck’s Defeat. Interpretive signs along that trail explain the significance of that Revolutionary War battle.

Picnic Options

Enjoy your picnic at the picnic tables. You can also spread your picnic blanket near the wooden benches. Either way, your day will be well spent at this gem of York County.
