Hop into the History of Come-See-Me

As spring awakens in Rock Hill, South Carolina, the city comes alive with the vibrant festivities of the annual Come-See-Me Festival, which will take place April 3-12. Established in 1962, this cherished event has blossomed from a modest weekend gathering into a ten-day celebration that attracts over 100,000 visitors each year. The festival’s rich history and enduring charm make it a cornerstone of Rock Hill’s cultural landscape.

Not So Icky After All

The inception of the Come-See-Me Festival can be credited to C.H. “Icky” Albright, a former mayor and state senator of Rock Hill. Albright envisioned a community event that would showcase the city’s picturesque gardens during the peak of spring bloom, encouraging residents to invite friends and family to experience the area’s natural beauty. His vision materialized into a weekend festival that not only highlighted Rock Hill’s floral splendor but also fostered community spirit and promoted tourism.

Vernon, Glen, and Glenda

A pivotal figure in the festival’s early days was Vernon Grant, a nationally acclaimed illustrator renowned for creating the iconic Snap, Crackle, and Pop® characters for Kellogg’s®. Residing in Rock Hill, Grant contributed significantly by designing the festival’s mascot, Glen the Frog, who made his debut in 1964. Grant believed that the festival needed a symbol that encapsulated its fun and carefree nature. Glen, along with his companion Glenda, continues to embody the spirit of the festival, delighting attendees of all ages. Each year, a new festival logo is crafted using one of Grant’s original drawings of Glen, ensuring that the mascot remains a central and beloved figure of the celebration.

Glencairn Garden

The festival’s heart lies in the historic Glencairn Garden, a beautifully landscaped area that serves as the backdrop for many of the events. Created by Dr. David A. Bigger and gifted to the city in 1958, the garden features an array of flora, including camellias, dogwoods, wisteria, and over 3,500 azaleas surrounding a cascading lily pond—often graced by live frogs, adding a whimsical touch to the scenery.

Something for Everyone

Over the decades, the Come-See-Me Festival has expanded its repertoire to include nearly 80 events and activities, catering to a wide range of interests. Highlights include the Parade, Road Races, Musical Mania, Chalk on Main, Beach Bash, Mayor’s Frog Jump, Gourmet Gardens, Hops at the Park, Sundaes with Glen and Mother Goose, Moonlight Jazz & Blues, Barbeque Cook-Off, and the Tailgate Party. These events not only provide entertainment but also strengthen community bonds and celebrate the unique character of Rock Hill.

Proud Sponsor

The success and longevity of the festival are largely attributed to the dedication of its volunteers and the generous support of local sponsors. Notably, the Rock Hill Coca-Cola Bottling Company has been a steadfast supporter, reflecting its commitment to the community and its traditions. This collaboration between volunteers, sponsors, and the city has ensured that the festival remains a highlight of the year, eagerly anticipated by residents and visitors alike.

As the Come-See-Me Festival continues to flourish, it stands as a testament to Rock Hill’s vibrant community spirit and its ability to blend tradition with innovation. Each spring, the festival invites everyone to experience the warmth, beauty, and camaraderie that define this beloved celebration.
