The History of Coca-Cola and the Modern Santa Claus

For over a century, Coca-Cola has been a cornerstone of refreshment, celebration, and cherished memories. Beyond its role as a global beverage icon, Coca-Cola played an instrumental role in shaping one of the most beloved holiday figures: the modern depiction of Santa Claus.

Haddon Sundblom’s Santa Claus

The story begins in the early 20th century, long after Coca-Cola was introduced in 1886 as a fountain drink. In 1931, Coca-Cola commissioned artist Haddon Sundblom to create holiday advertisements featuring Santa Claus. While Santa had been a fixture of holiday folklore for centuries, his image varied significantly across cultures. Sundblom’s work, inspired by Clement Clarke Moore’s 1822 poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (commonly known as “The Night Before Christmas”), depicted a warm, jolly Santa with a rotund figure, twinkling eyes, and a flowing white beard.

Red & White Palettes

Coca-Cola’s Santa wore a bright red suit trimmed with white fur—a palette that mirrored the brand’s colors. Sundblom’s Santa wasn’t just a holiday icon; he was approachable, joyful, and kind, exuding a warmth that resonated deeply with audiences. These illustrations appeared in Coca-Cola advertisements from the 1930s through the 1960s, cementing the image of Santa that we recognize today.

Coke’s Santa Was Everywhere

While Coca-Cola didn’t invent Santa Claus, it undeniably helped refine and popularize his contemporary image. Sundblom’s artwork appeared everywhere—from magazines and store displays to billboards—spreading cheer and uniting people through the universal language of Coca-Cola and the holidays.

Continuing Connection

Fast-forward to today, and the connection between Coca-Cola and the holidays remains as strong as ever. Santa Claus continues to appear in Coca-Cola advertising campaigns, reminding us of simpler times and the enduring joy of sharing a Coke with loved ones. Additionally, Coca-Cola’s festive branding, including its iconic holiday trucks and polar bears, carries the same spirit of warmth and togetherness.
