Rocky Shoals Spider Lily

The Rock Hill community has a lot to be proud of. From the beginning the Rock Hill Coca-Cola Bottling Company has taken an interest in and made an investment in this wonderful area. One of the most unique features to the region isn’t a person or an institution, but a flower. The Rocky Shoals Spider Lily grows only in a few places in the world, and the Catawba River plants make up the largest single population on the planet.

Now’s the Time

This rare species will be in peak bloom at the end of May. You won’t want to miss the opportunity to see them in all their splendor. For just a few short weeks in late spring, the Catawba River is awash with great stands of these lovely, delicate blossoms.

Landsford Canal

The best place to view the Rocky Shoals Spider Lily is at Landsford Canal State Park. Located at 2051 Park Dr. in Catawba, Landsford Canal State Park is just a short jaunt from Rock Hill, making it a perfect spot for a day trip outing. Pack a picnic (complete with an assortment of products from the Rock Hill Coca-Cola Bottling Company, of course) and head over to the park for a delightful day viewing the lilies.

A Short Walk

Hop on the hiking trail and walk the relatively easy ¾ mile to the best area for Rocky Shoals Spider Lily viewing. Along the way you’ll see a bit of history and a bit of nature. Learn how the geography of the river is ideal for the Rocky Shoals Spider Lily, but created problems for navigating the river. Those problems led to the building of the canal system, which is still visible.

Keep an Eye Out for Eagles

You might just spot a bald eagle or two while you’re making your way to the lilies. The breeding pair is usually in the area from February to June. If you time it right, an eagle fledgling might make an appearance as well.

Viewing Platform

Once you’ve made your way to the platform, you’ll be greeted by thousands of white flowers that span the shoals of the river. The shallow water there is the only place these plants can grow. Spend some time on the platform marveling at the rare sight, then continue on the trail back to the beginning.

Have a Coke

Once you arrive back to the picnic area, have a Coke and consider that you’ve just seen a sight that few other people have the opportunity to see. The Rock Hill community is surely an interesting place!
