It’s time for another Rock Hill Coca-Cola Bottling Company picnic trip. This month we head down to Sugarloaf Mountain located in the Sandhills State Forest. So pack your picnic, complete with a cooler full of Coca-Cola products, and hit the road!
How to Get There
From Rock Hill, the drive to Sugarloaf Mountain will take about 1 hour and 15 minutes. You will head roughly southeast from the city. Take US-21S out of town. Then take SC-5E towards Lancaster. Merge onto US-521, then merge onto SC-903S. Finally, take SC-151S to the Sandhills State Forest.
What to Do
The area is open dawn to dusk, so if you’re planning your picnic trip for the summer, you might consider getting an early start out of Rock Hill. Do all the active stuff in the morning, then relax at lunch.
Hiking
Sugarloaf Mountain is the main attraction at the Sandhills State Forest. This unusual geological formation rises 100 feet above the rest of the flat terrain. The 60 miles of trails in the State Forest are all relatively easy, so you won’t wear yourself out too much from hiking. At Sugarloaf, you can also enjoy a walk along the nature trail.
Fishing
With 13 stocked ponds in the State Forest, you’re bound to catch a fish if you really want to. These ponds are open for fishing year-round.
Bird Watching
To be sure, you’re likely to encounter plenty of wildlife around Sugarloaf Mountain, but a dedicated bird watcher might encounter a special sighting. Keep your eyes peeled for a red-cockaded woodpecker. These rare birds nest in cavities in pine trees.
Picnic Spots
When you decide to wrap up activities and unpack your picnic, head over to the rustic stone and timber shelters. They are the ideal spot for your meal.
Horseback Riding
Although it might be a little beyond the scope of a picnic day trip, a lot of people ride horses around the extensive trail system. Be aware that horseback riding requires a permit.
